This is one of my larger pieces which came together after an influential trip to Italy. I was moved by the magnificence of the sculptures and much of the artwork there and this is my modern interpretation of the fresco paintings. I built plaster up and painted acrylics on top, creating a wonderful embossed presence and then incorporated some classical bronze leaf.
She is a fiery angel made up of mainly orange and blue hues. She had me stirring in many different ways as I was creating her, I think this is reflective in her flow, for our is eye taken on a figure of eight motion around the canvas. Her gaze is fixated on us the viewer as if to say – Time to trust in your own boldness and courage. She is an impassioned companion guiding us to face our fears.
Her name came to me at the last minute and I knew she had to be called after the gemstone Carnelian. This stone supports the sacral chakra which is the seat of our creativity and joy. It’s colour is orange and gives courage to put into action our primal desires and creative pursuits.
The whole bold piece measures 24″ x 18″ on a canvas panel.
